Attention entrepreneurs: How to break free from the prison you built

I've built businesses with over $450 million in sales and have helped others generate over $10 billion. Sharing what I've learned.

Your business is a prison.

Through years of work, sweat, hustle, effort, and money, you built it.

Is this the life you dreamed of?

You have little free time.

Every day, every minute, your mind is consumed with your business’s activities.

You make decent, though not great, money.

You are totally isolated.

You experience little life outside the screen.

What you really wanted—a reminder

When you first thought of building your business, you imagined something different.

Wealth. Abundance. Nice homes. Nice cars.

Freedom. Traveling. Independence. Exploration.

Fun. Adventure. Hobbies. Family time.

You traded your dreams for Slack notifications.

How to get out

9 times out of 10, you need to simplify, then scale.

Cut what doesn’t matter to make room for what does.

Quit wasting time on activities and projects that, while interesting, are unlikely to get you to where you want to go.

Double down on the few things that work.

Be like the man who struck fear into Bruce Lee and mastered one kick 10,000 times.

Then, don’t forget your dreams.

Make time for them. Now.

Force your work into fewer hours. You’ll still get the same amount—possibly more—done.

Remember that there is life outside screens.

Play. Explore. Spend time with your family. Pursue your hobbies. Travel. Get offline.

That’s what you’re doing all this for, right?

To breaking free,

Matt
